Dear Family and Friends,
New Works
Please keep these new works in your prayers this coming
year. As we have mentioned before, new works are, by
definition, more fragile than long-term works. We have
added the names of the pastors or lay-leaders of these
works, so you might pray for them by name.
1. Los Limones. This work was begun as a direct result
of the Human Needs project directed to sufferers from
Hurricane Stan in October, 2005. It is sponsored and
supported by First Baptist Church, San Marcos, and its
pastor, Santiago Rosales. Young lay leader, Bernabe
Escalante, is the appointed leader of this work. Every
weekend, members of FBC-San Marcos take the several hours
trip, one-way, to Los Limones to work with the new
congregation mission, which they have named "Misión
Samaria".
2. Uspantán and Its Two Missions. The mother work,
only two years old, is growing rapidly, and now has
approximately 400 members. It is named "The Family of
God", and led by dynamic pastor Boanerges Rivera.
Special prayer is requested as Boanerges builds a strong
leadership base. To help in that end, Roger began a branch
of the Joshua Quiché Bible Institute held in the church
every Wednesday evening. In Roger's absence, Miguel Angel
Cajas and Narciso Poz, helped by missionaries Keith Stamps
and Alan Lyons, will continue the Institute in order to
train the new leaders in doctrine and church growth. The
two missions have approximately sixty members each, and
are led by leaders in the mother church.
3. Cojxac. This young work, is led by young leader José
Caniz, and has as its membership approximately 15 young
adults and 25 children. It is named "El Nuevo Pacto".
A couple of the young men, Luis and Marco Yax, will be
working in the new mission in Rancho de Teja.
4. Chivarreto. This young work, known as "Chivarreto
Baptist Church" began approximately two years of age,
in a village which has a population of approximately
10,000 people. Roger and Vicki have led the Thursday night
services for the last two years, and began leading the
mostly children's work on Sunday afternoons when the
Hoovers went on Stateside Assignment a year ago. They have
been helped by Quiché missionaries Jorge and Julia Poz
and Priscila Yac, who have led out in the women's group on
Wednesday afternoons and a Kid's Club on Thursday
afternoons, as well as helped with the Thursday evening
church services. When we left on Stateside Assignment,
Jorge and the team will cover the Thursday evening and
Sunday afternoon services until the Hoovers return from
the US. Pray for lay leaders Joel and Catarina, that the
Lord would continue to bless and use them as they lead out
in this new work.
5. Rancho de Teja. The new mission, known as "Arca
de Salvación", is led on Sunday mornings by lay
leaders Victor Argueta and Narciso Poz, along with Roger
and Vicki. This new work was started as a result of a very
successful women's group that has met on Tuesday
afternoons for two years, and led by the Vicki, Jorge and
Julia Poz, and Priscila Yac. In our absence, Luis and
Marco Yax of El Nuevo Pacto Baptist Church, will be coming
on Friday afternoons and spending the night, working with
youth. Marcelino Agustin and Elvin and Angela Par will
come to Rancho de Teja on Saturday afternoons and spend
the night, working with young couples and assisting Victor
and Narciso with the Sunday morning services.
6. San Ramón. This new mission, known as "The
Prayer House" is led by lay leader Gustavo Camacho,
and meets on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday afternoons,
with approximately twelve adults and their children
attending. A new women's group was started a few months
ago, and meets on Monday afternoons with the help of the
Quiché Core Team.
7. Chuicavioc. This new church, known as "Vid
Verdadera", is led by co-pastors Enrique Coyoy and
Marcelino Agustin, and is growing. There are now
approximately sixty adults attending, along with twenty to
twenty-five children. The new church is leading out in a
concerted way in new mission starts. Marcelino, and
several others, have been consistent in going with Roger
on Tuesday afternoons and evenings to visit in Rancho de
Teja and Chivarreto new mission starts. In our absence,
Marcelino, Elvin, and Angela will be spending part of
every weekend in Rancho de Teja in order to help stabilize
that new work.
8. Uspantan. This struggling new mission, right outside
of Uspantán in a poorer area, is led by Francisco Castro,
who is a member of the Joshua Quiché Bible Institute.
Pray for Francisco, that the Lord would bless his efforts
for Him, and that many would come to know the Lord through
this mission.
Team from Missouri, led by Vicki's brother, Ben
Vicki's brother, Ben, and sister-in-law, Ruth, led a
team from June 16-23 to repair the two little adobe houses
that we are renting to use as the new mission, and build a
latrine on the property. (The adobe houses will be used as
the meeting place for the women's and children's groups on
Tuesday afternoons, and Bible studies and church services
on the weekends.) In addition, the little houses will be
used as housing for the young leaders who will be spending
Friday and Saturday nights in Rancho de Teja in order to
grow that work.
Roger and Vicki led several team members, along with
Jorge Poz, and friend Santos, to plant 2000 cedar trees in
a reforestation effort.
The rehabilitation of these houses, and the
reforestation project, is shown on the photo gallery
website mentioned earlier. It also shows the
"before" and "after" photos of the
adobe houses, as well as the two united church services
that were held on June 10 and 16.
This team did a tremendous job on rehabilitating these
houses and in reforestation, and it was not easy work. We
are thankful for their faithfulness in leading out in
these volunteer mission efforts.
Go Team to Uspantán the First Week of June, led
by Larry and Sarah Plyler
We are thankful for the fine work that Larry and Sarah
Plyler and the teams they have led in different Qucihé
areas. In early June, Larry and Sarah led a team to
"The Family of God", Uspantán, to work with
church members in evangelism of their town and surrounding
areas. The team was a great success, and we are thankful
for Larry and Sarah's work in this town.
San Cristobal
We are currently visiting and investigating
possibilities of starting a new Bible Study in the town of
San Cristobal. Please pray as we look for the "man of
peace" in this town. Pray that we can begin new Bible
studies in this town, and that many will come to a saving
knowledge of Jesus through this effort.
Association of Churches
This Saturday will be the next meeting of the
Association of Churches at 2:00 p.m. The statutes of the
Association have been written and approved by leadership,
and will be presented to the general body. Please pray for
unity and determination among this group to reach more
Quiché for the Kingdom. Please pray for the leaders:
Narciso Poz, Roger Grossmann, Victor Argueta, and Priscila
Yac.
Joshua Quiché Bible Institute-3 branches
Please keep this important institute in your prayers.
It currently meets in Chicua I, Quetzaltenango, and Uspantán.
Pray that the Lord would use this ministry to develop and
guide pastors and leaders. Pray that the Institute would
grow in each area. Pray for Narciso Poz and Miguel Angel
Cajas, as they lead out in this effort, under Roger's
collaboration and leadership.
Thank you, again, for your prayers. We ask your
continued prayers for all of the members of the Quiché
Core Team, and thank you for your faithfulness over the
years. We will continue to keep you posted and informed,
even as we are away, physically.
Yours in Him,

Dear Family and Friends,
Thank you so much for your faithful prayers for the
Quiché people and the work the Lord has led us to here
among them. We know that your prayers undergird everything
we are seeing Him do here, and we thank you for praying.
New pictures are on the website. We are thankful for
Chuck Gunter and his desire to serve the Lord in this way.
Chuck's ministry is known as Jericho TV Ministries, and he
sponsors mission reports from Guatemala, Honduras, and
Liberia. You can see the ministries he highlights by going
to his website at <www.jerichotv.org>. You can go
directly to the photogallery page he sponsors with
pictures we send him by clicking onto: <http://grossmann.jerichomedia.net/gallery2/main.php>.
There you can click onto the Quiché Photo Gallery, and
then "slide show" to see all of the pictures, or
if you have already done that, can click onto page 13 (and
those following) to see the newest pictures of Uspantán,
the Fourth Annual Quiché Youth Retreat, etc.
New Works
As we have told you, and as you know from experience
and plain old common sense, new works are very fragile,
precisely because they are new, and because many,
if not all, of the members are new believers. Please
remember these works in your prayers in a concerted way.
Pray that they will become stronger and stronger, and that
they will be used by the Lord to reach many in their
communities and villages for Him. We list them here, along
with some of their most important and newest prayer
requests.
1) Los Limones. This work began out of the Hurricane
Stan relief efforts, and is led by a young leader, Bernabé
Escalante. Bernabé is helped a great deal by his home
church, First Baptist Church of San Marcos, and mentored
by his pastor, Santiago Rosales. Pray that Bernabé would
grow in his ability to lead this new congregation, and
that the Lord would use him mightily in reaching the
community of Los Limones for Him.
2) Chi Utuy. This new work began out of a particularly
successful women's group that targeted young families. Cántico
Nuevo Baptist Church is now sponsoring this work. Elvin
Par, a young man out of the new work in Chuicavioc has
agreed to spend weekends in Chi Utuy with his wife,
Angela, and try to develop the congregation further.
(Elvin is one of the young people who felt the call to
full-time Christian service at the recent Fourth Annual
Quiché Youth Retreat.) We believe this week we may have a
house to rent for church services and the women's group,
which is important for the identity of the new
congregation. There are six adults who attend the church
services on Sunday morning regularly, with three others
who come sporadically. With the adults there are ten to
fifteen children who meet every week with Vicki. Pray for
all of those who are attending, but pray especially for
R., whose husband is a heavy drinker and for J., who is
the male leader of the group. Pray that Elvin might be
able to lead more young men and couples into the group.
We have been using the flannel board materials by the
Betty Lukens organization on Sunday mornings with the big
group. These help to tell the Bible stories in a visual,
as well as auditory, manner, and has captured the interest
of the small congregation. We recently told the story of
Noah and showed the group that those who were in the ark
were saved, those outside the ark perished, a dramatic
illustration of salvation. Several of the adults listening
excitedly began to talk to each other, and then ask
questions about salvation. Pray for increased wisdom from
the Lord for those who lead this group and those who
attend. Pray that many will come to know the Lord.
3) Chivarreto. This new work, known as Chivarreto
Baptist Church, continues to meet in the home of Catarina
and Joel. This past Thursday night there were eleven
adults and eleven children attending. Pray for the women's
group that meets on Wednesday afternoons and the
children's club that meets on Thursday afternoons. Pray,
too, for the children's church services that meet on
Sunday afternoons, where between twenty-twenty-five meet
every Sunday afternoon.
One of the women who came this past Thursday is a woman
known as the community drunk. She accepted the Lord
several months ago when Vicki, Priscila, and Catarina
visited her during a time of sobriety. Afterwards, she
fell again, but she had captured a place in our hearts,
and we would visit her family from time to time. At the
end of the service last Thursday, she asked for special
prayer, saying, "Alcoholism has robbed me of
everything...my family, my children, my home, even my
clothes and personal items. Pray that I will be strong and
not drink any more." Will you pray for her? The Lord
knows her name and her situation. Pray that she will be
able to leave drinking. Pray she will be discipled into a
strong believer. Pray that the members of this small group
would not forget her, but reach out to her and minister to
her.
4) Cojxac. The new work, known as El Nuevo Pacto, was
birthed out of great difficulty in this Quiché village.
In keeping with the predominant youthfulness of Guatemalan
culture, there are fifteen young adults and twenty-five
children, along with one adult woman, meeting regularly in
this new work that meets in a rental facility. This church
is led by young pastor, José Caniz, who is growing daily
in his ability to lead his flock.
5) Chuicavioc. This new work, known as Vid Verdadera,
continues to grow. This week they have an Operation Go
team, led by Larry and Sarah Plyler, working with them to
evangelize and announce the desire of the church to reach
their community. Co-pastors are Enrique Coyoy and
Marcelino Augustin lead this congregation situated in an
area that has many bars and cantinas. Alcoholism is a
serious problem for many, but this area is noted for the
majority of families having had members die from
alcohol-related causes.
6) San Ramón. This new work is led by lay leader
Gustavo Camacho. Pray for Gustavo as he is a young leader.
Pray for the new women's group this congregation as
started, and for church services on Tuesday and Thursday
evenings and Sunday afternoons.
7) Uspantán and its two new missions. This new work,
known as The Family of God, is led by Boanerges Rivera.
The church is rapidly growing, with 400 now in attendance,
but has problems unique to quickly expanding churches with
many new believers. Pray for wisdom on doctrinal issues,
and pray for the new believers as they are discipled into
strong, dynamic leaders who can reach their families and
friends for the Lord.
Pray for its two new missions in different villages,
one of which has sixty people attending and a little
building that the church constructed. Pray for the laymen
who lead these new missions. Pray that these new works
that they would lead many to a saving knowledge of Jesus.
Bible Institute
Pray for the three locations of the Bible Institute (Uspantán,
Chicua I, and Quetzaltenango) and the thirty-seven
students (pastors and leaders) who meet weekly. Pray for
Roger, Miguel Angel, and Narciso as they teach these
students. Pray that these leaders would be used in a
mighty way to begin and develop churches in the rural
areas. Roger has been speaking with some leaders in Nebaj,
and they are interested in becoming part of the Uspantán
group Pray that these new students would be used mightily
by the Lord in churches and missions in Nebaj.
Women's Groups
Please continue to pray for the women's groups in
Rancho de Teja (Chi Utuy), San Ramón, and Chivarreto.
These continue to impact the women in these areas in a
mighty way for the Lord. Pray that the Lord would bring in
new women and would give increased wisdom to the women
leading these groups.
Association of Missionary Churches
Pray for this new association which will meet this
Saturday afternoon. Pray that it will give an identity to
the churches and help develop pastors and leaders for
current and future churches and missions. Pray that
churches and leaders will learn to work together for the
good of the churches and to reach more Quiché for Him.
Our best to each one of you, and many thanks for your
faithfulness in praying for the Quiché people.
Yours in Him,

Dear Family and Friends,
Thank you so much for your prayers for the work here
among the Quiché. We cherish each one of you, and hope
you had a blessed Easter. We want to share with you some
praises and requests that greatly need your prayer
support. Thank you for bringing these before your
churches, Sunday Schools, and prayer groups.
Praises
Fourth Annual Quiché Youth Congress
This past week, Holy Week, the fourth annual Quiché
Youth Congress was held. There were sixty-four in
attendance, representing nine churches. The theme was
"Thinking Like Jesus", using the "Mind of
Christ" materials. Small group sessions covered
important topics such as "Abstinence in a Fallen
World", "Improving Music and Writing Praise
Songs", "What to do when Others Treat You
Bad", and "Marriage: Finding a Godly
Spouse". Youth leaders, Marco, Luis, Jorge, and
Priscila directed much of the camp's daily activities,
including music, and did an incredible job.
Upon arrival, the youth were mixed up into color-coded
groups, in an effort to break down church groups and
cliques. These groups elected their own leaders, and many
activities were undertaken in these groups, including the
Grand Mountain Search, which was held all day on Friday.
This team-building opportunity was replete with lessons
about living the life God wants for each of His followers.
The youth were given a satellite map and told that
following this map, while on their search through the
mountains overlooking beautiful Lake Atítlan, was
imperative to avoid getting lost. They were also told that
in life we need to follow the map God has given us, the
Bible, so that we may not lose our way in the bigger race.
The youth teams searched for Scripture verses which they
then had to memorize, but were warned that speed was not
the primary objective, but rather, performing well
throughout the course, and day. Team leaders were
instructed to watch and care for their respective team
members, putting them first, in all aspects. Adult
leaders, including Roger and Vicki, Jason Mackey, Joe
Hoover, Carolynn Amen, Efraín Juárez, and Jorge Poz were
posted in strategic areas of the mountain to supervise and
help the teams as they came through, as well as listen to
the verses memorized by team members. Following the
mountain run, the youth then had to go to key areas in the
village of Sololá and have their participation noted by
willing inhabitants. Finally, they were rewarded with ice
cream at their last outpost.
During the closing ceremony, five youth gave their
lives to full-time Christian service. Please pray for
these youth. Pray, too, for the youth who helped lead this
year's youth congress: Jorge, Priscila, Luis, Marco,
Bernabé, José, and Lesli. Pray that God would continue
to use these special young people, and give them Divine
wisdom.
Team to First Baptist Church-San Marcos
A week ago, we worked with a team from First Baptist
Church-Ellisville, Missouri, led by Russ Ewing, in the
town of San Marcos. The team worked to build playground
equipment for the church, held classes for women and
children, went door-to-door evangelizing with church
members, and sponsored a youth event. As a result, several
people have already been added to the church, and a larger
number of people have expressed interest in the church and
attended some of the services. The church was encouraged
to improve children and youth ministries, and to begin a
women's group based on Bible storying, along with health,
cooking, and nutrition classes.
Please pray for pastor Santiago Rosales and his
precious congregation, who want so much to reach San
Marcos and outlying areas for the Lord. Santiago now has
ten adolescents and ten shoe shine boys (this was
highlighted a couple of months ago) living in the pastor's
house on the property. These adolescents and young boys
come from extremely poor families, and Santiago is
feeding, clothing, and helping them go to school. Pray for
these young people that they might all come to know the
Lord Jesus, and be discipled into strong believers.
Chi Utuy
We have had very good attendance on Sunday mornings in
the new mission congregation that has begun out of the
women's group in this area of the village of Rancho de
Teja. We are now looking for a house to rent to expand
further and have recognition as a new church. The women
are actively looking for an abandoned house in the
immediate area that will serve as the new church, as well
as house the women's and children's groups and mobile
clinic. Pray that we would have the Lord's wisdom in this
most important matter.
Please continue to pray for these special women and
their families. Pray that each one would be discipled into
a strong believer. Pray for the husbands and children of
these women that they would come to a saving knowledge of
the Lord Jesus.
Joshua Quiché Bible Institute
We rejoice that we now have 37 students in the
three branches: Quetzaltenango, Chicua I, and Uspantán.
The classes are very pragmatic and directed toward the
needs of rural pastors and leaders. Pray that this
Institute would make a dramatic difference in the
leadership of churches throughout the Quiché areas. Pray
for Roger, Narciso, and Miguel, that the Lord would give
them divine wisdom and safety as they travel to each of
these areas weekly to give classes. Classes meet on
Saturday afternoons in Quetzaltenango, Wednesday mornings
in Chicua I, and Wednesday evenings in Uspantán.
Prayer Requests
US Outreach
We have been recently contacted by two men, in
different states in the US, who are working with Quiché
people in evangelistic efforts. Please pray for these two
men and their groups that many Quiché would come to a
saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus and be discipled into
strong, vibrant believers. We were thankful that these men
contacted us. If you know of similar outreach efforts,
please let us know. We would be glad to send materials to
anyone working with Quiché people.
Go Team to Chivarreto
As we have written you earlier, we have asked Larry
Plyler, Strategy Coordinator for the Operation Go teams in
Guatemala, to send teams to selected Quiché areas. One of
these teams will be working in Chivarreto this coming
week. Pray that people who do not, yet, know the Lord
would come to a saving knowledge of Jesus this coming
week, and be discipled into strong believers. Pray that
many more will be added to small mission at the home of
Catarina and Joel.
New Works
As always, we ask you to remember the new works in
different villages. These works are fragile, and have as
their membership brand-new believers. Please bathe these
new works in your daily prayers, and whenever the Lord
brings them to your mind:
Los Limones, founded out of the relief efforts of
Hurricane Stan, led by lay pastor and young man, Bernabé.
Chivarreto, church services Thursday evening and Sunday
afternoon, women's group on Wednesday afternoon and
Children's group on Thursday afternoon. Roger leads this
group on Thursday and Sundays.
Chi Utuy, church services on Sunday a.m., women's and
children's groups on Tuesday afternoon. Led by Narciso,
Victor, and Roger.
San Ramón, church services Tuesday, Thursday, and
Sunday. Lay pastor Gustavo.
Uspantán. Rapidly growing group led by pastor
Boanerges.
Special Prayer Requests
Please pray for these special people who are suffering
from serious health problems. Pray that the Lord would
intervene in their care, and that He would give wisdom and
direction to the health care personnel who are caring for
them:
F, the cousin of Quiché missionary Priscila, has a
serious medical problem. F. is nine years old, and has had
several crisis in the last few days, putting her into the
ICU. Her physicians will be moving her to the Capital when
she stabilizes for a major surgery, that will hopefully,
save her life. F has been suffering with this health
problem for two years, and her faith is amazing. Pray for
her and her family.
C, a young K´ekchi´ man has been known to us for a
number of years. He had surgery about 10 years ago to
repair a congenital problem, but in the last few weeks has
developed kidney failure. He will now have to undergo
dialysis for the rest of his life. He is very poor, has
little formal education, and does not speak Spanish as his
first language. Because of this, he does not always
understand medical instructions. He is learning to perform
his own peritoneal dialysis. Pray for C, that his
physicians will have great wisdom and care for him. Pray
that he would have the peace of God in his life. Pray that
his family would understand his need for help.
Thank you, again, for your prayers for these requests.
Truly, you are part of our team, and we thank the Lord for
your faithfulness in lifting these petitions to the
Father. We have new pictures, and will be sending them to
our friend, Chuck, to update them on the photo gallery
section of the website.
Our best to each one of you,

Dear Family and Friends,
As always, we thank you so much for your prayers and
encouragement. We know your prayers undergird the work here
among the Quiché, and thank you for remembering these
beautiful people, and the work the Lord has allowed the
Quiché Core Team to have among them.
Joshua Quiché Bible Institute
There are now three branches: Chicua I, Quetzaltenango,
and Uspantán, with a total of 36 pastors and leaders
studying. Please pray that these precious leaders will be
faithful and that God would multiply their efforts for the
Kingdom. Pray for Roger, Narciso, and Miguel Angel, as they
lead out in this effort. Pray that more students will be
added. The Bible Institute is approximately three years old,
and is dedicated to practical and accessible teaching for
rural pastors and leaders.
New Works
Chi Utuy
Please continue to pray for the new group that meets for
church services on Sunday mornings at 10:00. Roger and
Narciso teach the adults, and Victor, Vicki, and Nathanael
work with the growing children's group. The women's group
has been opened to receive more women from the community,
and several new women have been added. The agronomy project
led by Roger is enthusiastically received by the women and
their families. Please pray for these women and their
families. Several of the women have accepted the Lord, and
some of their husbands have expressed interest in coming to
the church services, especially if the time is changed to
the afternoon. Pray that many in this area of the village
will come to know the Lord as their Savior and be discipled
into a new congregation of believers.
Uspantán
This new work of two years now has 400 people attending
regularly, and has started a new mission, which has sixty
people attending, in an outlying village. The church is
named "The Family of God", because as pastor
Boanerges says, "We want to be a real family of God in
Uspantán." In this town the Joshua Bible Institute has
a branch, with twenty of the church's leaders attending
every Wednesday evening from 6:00 -9:00. Please pray for
these leaders in a concerted way, that they will lead this
new congregation well. Pray for the new mission and two
additional sites where the church is considering starting
new missions. Pray for pastor Boanerges, and lay leaders
Marvin, Giovanni, José David, Corinna, and Leticia as they
work to bring the Lord Jesus to the people of Uspantán and
make an eternal difference in their lives and their
families' lives.
El Nuevo Pacto
This little group continues to struggle, but the Lord is
blessing them under the leadership of young lay pastor José
Caniz. Every Sunday, approximately twenty-five children are
taught by Lucky. Marco teaches the youth, and has
approximately fifteen attending. There are seven adults in
this congregation. This little group came out of a very bad
situation, but they are persevering on in spite of continued
community opposition and rumors. Please pray for José,
Marco, Luis, María, and Lucky as they continue to work this
area for the Lord. Pray that He would multiply their efforts
for Him. Pray that many people will come to a saving
knowledge of the Lord Jesus. Pray that this new group would
have a sweet testimony among the community in which they
live and work.
Los Limones
Please continue to pray for this new mission, named
"Misión Samaria" by the sponsoring church, First
Baptist Church of San Marcos. Pastor Santiago Rosales
continues to lead out in this effort, and every Sunday
several members of the mother congregation take a few buses
to arrive in Los Limones (approximately five hours, one
way), to work in this new mission with the adults and
children. Pray for lay leader, Bernabe, who is very
dedicated to his little congregation. The mother church is
working on building a small building in Los Limones to
identify the congregation as a formal church. Pray that many
will come to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus through
this effort. Pray for Santiago and Bernabe, and the many
other unnamed brothers and sisters who have dedicated so
much to reach the people of Los Limones.
San Ramón
This work is led by lay pastor Gustavo, and is growing.
Earlier this month, Roger led a prayer walk of approximately
fifty Quiché brothers and sisters in San Ramón, which
greatly encouraged the members of the new congregation. Six
women from the congregation have come to Quetzaltenango
every week for a month to be trained by Vicki, Julia, and
Priscila in beginning and maintaining an evangelistic
women's group, and simultaneous children's club. These new
groups will start on Wednesday morning, March 14. The Quiché
Core Team will be on site to help with any problems for an
extended period of time, and the women will come to
Quetzaltenango for monthly training sessions in order to
ensure the quality of this new group. The women are inviting
women of the village who do not, yet, know the Lord. Please
pray that this effort will bring many women and their
families into this new church start.
Chivarreto
Please remember this new work in your prayers in a
concerted way. Although we have a number of children who
attend the children's club and Sunday School, there are
still only a handful of adults who attend Thursday evening
church service. Pray that the Operation Go emphasis and the
women's group will be successful in bringing more adults
into the church. Pray for Joel and Catarina that they will
be a mighty witness among their community.
Upcoming Events
Pastors and Leaders Retreat
This weekend is the Annual Quiché Pastors and Leaders
Retreat. The topic this year is "Disciples, and How to
Disciple". We are blessed to have missionaries Keith
and Penny Stamps come to be a part of this important
emphasis. Pray that there will be a mighty moving of the
Holy Spirit among the pastors and leaders who attend. Please
pray that the vision to reach more Quiché for the Lord
would be internalized by all who attend. Pray for great
wisdom as the material is taught, so that each person who
attends will leave enabled to lead their congregations and
future congregations well.
Team to San Marcos
Please pray for a team from FBC-Ellisville, who will be
working with women and youth programs, as well as building
playground equipment for FBC San Marcos the week of March
16. Pray that many families will be reached during this
week. Pray for the members of FBC-San Marcos, that this will
be a time of great blessing for them and their community.
Pray for the health and safety of team members.
Youth Retreat
Please pray for the Fourth Annual Quiché Youth Retreat
to be held the week prior to Easter. Pray that many Quiché
youth will attend. Pray for the Quiché Core Team as they
lead out in this effort and for the team members from
Concord Baptist Church in St. Louis and First Baptist
Church, Cassville. Pray that youth who don't, yet know the
Lord would come to know Him and be discipled to be future
leaders. Pray that all of the arrangements and planning
would go smoothly so that this retreat will be a highlight
for the youth who attend.
Go Teams
We have asked the Operation Go missionaries to bring
eight teams to key, targeted Quiché areas over the next few
months. Please pray that God would bless these Go teams as
they walk, door-to-door, taking copies of the Understandable
Bible, CDs and cassette tapes in Quiché, and invitations to
join or begin new Bible studies in their villages. The Quiché
Core Team will follow up on each and every one of the
positive responses that are received through this effort.
Two weeks ago, Go teams were in the village of Cantel,
working with the Baptist church Cántico Nuevo. A couple of
people were added to the church as a result of this effort,
and the Go Team greatly encouraged the leadership of this
church by their example of faithfulness.
This week a team was sent to the village of Chivarreto to
evangelize in the segment that connects with the adjoining
village of San Antonio Sija. We hope to advertise the new
group that meets at Catarina and Joel's house on Thursday
evenings and Sunday afternoons. Please pray this effort will
be successful.
Thank you, again, for prayers. They are vital in the
ministry the Lord has led the Quiché Core Team to among the
Quiché people. Please pray for the Quiché Core Team that
they would have wisdom and strength.
Our best to each one of you,
The Quiché Core Team

Grossmann Praise and Prayer Report,
January 25, 2007
Dear Family and Friends,
We hope this newsletter finds each of you doing well. We
are honored when you send us your prayer requests, letters,
and cards, and encourage you to continue doing so. If we do
not respond fairly rapidly, you can be assured that the
message was lost in cyber-space. We are not sure how that
happens, but happen it does.
We have some very excellent news for you this time, and
will use this newsletter to highlight it. Thank you for your
concerted prayers. We know they are undergirding the ministry
the Lord has led us to here among the beautiful Guatemalan
Quiché people, and you are a valuable part of our Quiché
Core Team.
As always, we are especially thankful to
our friend, Chuck Gunter, who helps us immeasurably in the
work here by hosting a website for us. He has many other
ministries, but takes the time to help us in this special way
so we can get the message out to you all. You can go on his
website and see videos and pictures that will make what we
report here more understandable and vivid. His website is
www.jericho.org, and you can click onto the mission links
until you arrive at the page with the Quiché work on it. Or,
you can go directly to that page by clicking onto <http://grossmann.jerichomedia.net>.
Now for the good news we are reporting this month....
Uspantán
About two years ago, Marvin of Roger's Purpose-Driven
Church class and the Joshua Quiché Bible Institute, returned
home to Uspantán, an area that we had targeted and were
praying for (at that time we were encouraging and helping
another lay leader, but the work did not take off). Over the
past months, Marvin would call or visit Roger and tell him
about the progress of a new church start he was involved in.
This church start now has 400 in attendance, and has
started a new mission with 60 in attendance.
They are in the process of starting two new missions,
and held VBS in December with 250 children attending.
They are now members of the Association of Missionary Baptist
Churches. Roger travels weekly to talk with the pastor and
leaders, and will be starting a new branch of the
Joshua Quiché Bible Institute in February. Roger and
Vicki will be going to Uspantán tomorrow to talk with the
pastor and leaders about the new Bible Institute and how to
start a women's outreach group based on a modified community
health model.
Shoe Shine Boys
Thank you for your prayers for this outreach ministry the
Lord has led Quiché brother and pastor, Santiago Rosales, to
begin among the young men who come into San Marcos from
poorer, outlying villages to work as shoe shine boys. They
cannot return to their villages at night, but spend the nights
on the street wherever they can, exposed to many different
kinds of vice and corruption. Santiago felt led some months
ago to reach out to these young men and try to lead them to
the Lord, when someone who knew him told him that they had
seen two young boys sleeping on benches in the park. From that
began a ministry that is ever-expanding. These young men are
offered a place to sleep, meals, hot baths, clothes, and the
opportunity to study, and they are responding. Some of the
young men are hostile to the Gospel, because of their own
personal experiences, but through the love and respect they
have found at the church Santiago pastors, they are changing.
Santiago has begun evangelistic Bible studies among these
boys, and expects to send the older boys to the youth retreat
during Holy Week this year. He has built two new rooms to the
pastor's house, next to the church where he lives, to house
these young men. Please continue to pray for these young men,
that they would come to know the Lord and be future leaders in
their churches and communities. Pray for Santiago, who has a
"heart" for the Lord and for people. Pray for First
Baptist Church-San Marcos as it is used greatly for the
Kingdom in many ways.
Los Limones
This new work that was birthed out of the devastation of
Hurricane Stan, continues to grow, under the direction of
Santiago and First Baptist Church-San Marcos, and the
leadership of young lay pastor, Bernabé. Pray that God would
continue to bless these efforts, and that Bernabé and his
younger brother, Meme, who also is called to the ministry,
would grow to be mighty men of God.
Women's Groups
Please continue to pray for the women's groups in Chi Utuy
and Chivarreto. We are in the process of adding women's groups
in three more new works areas, including Uspantán. These
women's groups are based on a modified community health model.
Chronological Bible storying is the center of the women's
groups, with health, nutrition, cooking, and crafts added.
Pray for the women who will be leading these new groups, as
well as for the participants. Pray that many women and
families will be brought into the Kingdom through this effort.
Joshua Quiché Bible Institute
This year we will be adding a third location, Uspantán, to
the Bible Institute, and continuing in Chicua I and
Quetzaltenango. We have been running radio "spots"
on ten-twelve radio stations, and are hoping for many new
students. Please pray for these students, who are pastors and
leaders, that the Lord would use them greatly in the Kingdom's
work.
El Nuevo Pacto
Please pray for this new little group led by young Quiché
lay pastor, Chepe Caníz. Although only about 8 adults are
attending, there are twenty-five children meeting for Sunday
School. Pray for the young leadership that they might have
great wisdom. Pray that many will come to know the Lord
through their efforts for Him.
Association of Missionary Baptist Churches
Our last meeting on January 6, we had 35-40 brothers and
sisters attending. The group planned for the entire year of
2007. Please pray for this group of dedicated churches. We are
actively in planning for the retreat of Pastors and Leaders in
March and the Fourth Annual Quiché Retreat in April. Please
pray for these events, that many will choose to participate
and be trained to better serve the Lord.
Thank you, again, for your prayers for us, our families,
and the ministry the Lord has led us to in Guatemala. We are
so very thankful for each one of you.
Yours in Him,
The Quiché Core Team
